New Designers’ teapots are refreshing!

Walking around New Designers 2011 one could hardly fail to notice an extraordinary preponderance of eccentric, contemporary and vintage-style teapots in amongst the surface textiles, jewellery, fashion, home furnishings and greetings products.

This was such a stand-out theme that we could not help but dedicate a page of our show review to this quintessentially great British product. Well done tea-potters, we found you very refreshing!

Pictured above right is part of Rebecca Sims‘ collection, above left are some of Mirjana Smith’s charming Found Object and Assemblage Art creations.

Here is a pair of ceramic designer Angie Thirkell’s delightfully quirky teapot characters. We think Angie should scoop the award for ‘Teapot Queen’, keeping alive the afternoon cream cake dream in fine bone china and glass, all made in Britain.

Describing her work as extravagantly romantic and ridiculously impractical”, Alison says she engages in a “kind of domestic surrealism, somewhere between the Mad Hatter’s tea party and an Edwardian drawing room. It is a representation of ordinary objects as a sculptural installation; both romantic and impractical, creating works which link craft, design and industry.

Right are some of Clare Hewitt’s stylish contemporary ceramics designs featuring British motifs such as crowns and the Union Jack flag.
