Stationery from the States by Kathy Krassner, Krassner Communications
There were quite a few nice stationery companies exhibiting at the New York International Gift Fair recently held in New York City. Surprisingly, one of the most unique purveyors of paper products wasn’t a stationery company at all, but rather, one that specializes in vintage accessories for the table and home. Cake, based in Nashville, Tennessee, started out selling wine stoppers made from vintage doorknobs. The company later diversified into other product categories such as napkin rings, candlesticks, kitchen linens, lighting, magnet boards, silver-plate flatware and, yes, paper items.
Cake’s collection of “kitchen papers” includes notepads, recipe books, recipe cards, coasters, journals, serving papers and, my favorite, placemat pads. The “Italian Scroll” placemat pad shown features alternating designs of two different vintage clip-art designs. Additional placemat designs are also available, including the “Perfect Setting,” “Laurel Wreath” and “Artichoke.” Each pad contains 50 placemats made from 30% recycled content.
