Black and white are back as a touch of colour fatigue sets into the gift and home market and form comes to the fore.
The bellwether style barometer WGSN forecast at the start of spring that a trend for monochrome lifestyle products was due to hit the market, and a stroll around design-led trade seasonal trade events this autumn has proven it to be a sound prediction.
As with so many home and lifestyle trends the current theme appeared first on fashion catwalks, with Vogue predicting as far back as January 2014 that designers will “play with all manner of decorate devices to give black and white a fresh, modern makeover. Pattern play, couture detailing, geometrics and intelligent design all have their part to play in this style story.”
Following seasons of ever-more extravagant tropical prints in every colour under the sun as long as it’s vivid, plus rich bohemian patterns and strong metallic accents, it’s probably not surprising that many designers are reacting by bringing things back to black and white.
While the appetite for print and pattern remains strong, silhouettes, shadows and monochrome interpretations have clearly begun to shine through on home furnishings and accessories, gift, tableware and even greeting cards.
Effectively tapping into the monochrome trend are these tropical patterned, black and white cushions from RJB Stone (left), as spotted at Autumn Fair earlier in the season. Polite Greetings (above right) is also on trend with these mood-message candles and Velvet Olive has also hit the nail on the head with these graphic designs (bottom).
Melody Rose (top) brings a luxe effect to the trend with gold accents, also epitomising another strong theme in porcelain and tableware for quirky, leftfield design that’s great for gifting.
