The Royal College of Art (RCA) has revealed that works of art by a host of renowned artists and designers will feature in Stewarts Law RCA Secret 2016 exhibition and sale. Contributing artists and designers for this year include:
Peter Blake, Maggi Hambling, Grayson Perry, Marion Coutts, Lubaina Himid, Margaret Calvert, Frank Bowling, Steve McQueen, Jeremy Deller, Alison Wilding, Lawrence Weiner, Yinka Shonibare, Joseph Kosuth, Thomas Heatherwick, James Dyson, Zandra Rhodes and David Bailey.
Postcards have also been created by up-and-coming stars of the art world such as James Mylne, Henry Hudson and EwaWilczynsk, together with works by musicians Damon Albarn, William Orbit and Pete Fowler, and jewellers Theo Fennell and Emma Paolozzi and fashion designers Marta Jacubowski and Zandra Rhodes.
The cards will be exhibited anonymously among hundreds of established artists, ceramicists, sculptors, cartoonists, illustrators and designers together with current students, alumni and friends of the RCA.
Almost 2,000 postcard-sized artworks have been created for Stewarts Law RCA Secret 2016, which will take place from 8 – 15 April at the RCA’s Kensington campus. Each of the postcards will be sold anonymously for a fixed price of £55, with the identity of the maker revealed only once the purchase is complete. Art enthusiasts and collectors take the challenge to crack the secret and guess the identity of the postcards’ creators.
Also on display at the 2016 edition of RCA Secret – now in its 22nd year – will be a series of 23 limited-edition prints as part of Shakespeare Lives, a year-long celebration organised by the British Council to mark the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. The prints will be available to purchase for £350 each and were originally produced by the RCA Print programme in 2011 to celebrate Shakespeare’s quarto-centenary alongside 50 years of the RSC. The RCA will donate a full set of the prints to the British Council Collection.
All profits generated through the RCA Secret sale will go to the RCA Fund which supports emerging artists at a formative stage in their careers by funding scholarships to the College.
For the second year running, RCA Secret with Art Dubai will open to buyers at Alserkal Avenue, Dubai, on Monday 14 March and at Art Dubai on Thursday 17 March. Bespoke, postcard-sized artworks from the world’s leading creatives as well as RCA alumni, students and local artists and designers will be available to buy for 500 AED each.
