Designer Innovations at Tendence

At this year’s Tendence there will be two areas dedicated to up-and-coming talents, where a select few designers and craftspeople will introduce themselves and their ideas and where they will showcase their individual one-off items, prototypes and short-production runs.

43 designers, craftsmen and women will demonstrate their artisan skill at the show, taking place from 30 June to 3 July at Messe Frankfurt, Germany.

In the Accessories & Jewellery section of the ‘Talents’ in Hall 11.1, the focus is on the work of 21 exceptional designers. Buyers will find here some individual pieces – highlights with which to set off their selections.

The pieces of jewellery from Czech designer Alena Willroth (pictured above) are guaranteed to catch people’s eye. This designer, who has chosen Berlin as her home, creates extraordinary micro-shapes from sheet polyethylene. For her new collection ‘Slast’, Willroth has developed a special welding technique. Her pieces are all exclusively hand made.

Wladimir Arutti breaks new ground with his bag designs. For his first product line, ‘Trillion’, the fashion designer has drawn inspiration from Japanese cities and used architectural elements in his work. Laura Christmann, by contrast, plays with simple geometrical forms in her jewellery pieces, constantly re-combining them in new variations. Modern techniques such as 3D-printing and laser cutting are used in the jewellery of this designer from Dusseldorf, alongside traditional goldsmith’s craftsmanship.

Retailers in search of something a little special, outside of the mainstream, will find what they are looking for in Modern Crafts: in the ‘Talents’ area in Hall 9.0, 22 craftsmen and women will be showcasing their individual pieces and short production runs. Textile pieces are just as likely to be found here as small furniture items, lamps and skilfully worked objects in porcelain and earthenware.

In their diversity, Martin Schlotz’s pots (pictured above) open up possibilities for unusual glazes. The result is sometimes rough, sometimes smooth and sometimes polished and shiny. At the same time, the stoneware and porcelain vessels are underpinned by a rhythmic use of form and colour.

In their work, jewellery designer Veronika Watzková and product designer Stanislav Holý have combined ideas from a variety of fields in an artistic joint project – ‘Vessels’. Both graduates of AAAD (Academy of Art, Architecture and Design in Prague), they will be presenting their first collection ‘Bon’ at Tendence: a fusion of the Czech art of glass blowing with the filigree delicacy of jewellery design.

100 percent organic cotton, 100 percent sustainable production, 100 percent artistic creation: with the tagline ‘Art touches design’, conceptual artist Verena Rempel will be presenting her first collection of home textiles ‘Mimesis’. The abstract, geometrical ornamentation and the surreal landscape motifs emerge from the combination of photographic images of the artist’s hands and fingers in various poses.

Tendence will be taking place from 30 June to 3 July 2018.
