Helping deaf people cope with Covid measures

It has been widely reported that the use of face coverings during the COVID-19 crisis has created a lot of additional challenges for the 12 million deaf people in the UK who rely on lipreading to understand others.

Many shops and other organisations would love to do more to support their deaf customers, but just don’t know what to do. To make a difference at this time, Deafness support organisation, Terptree, has put together a simple Deaf Customer Notice printable as part of the #JustAsk campaign.

This can be displayed by businesses, organisations and retailers to reassure deaf customers that staff will temporarily lower their mask. This means deaf customers can just ask and find it easier to lipread.

The free PDF download includes:
• Printable sign in both A4 and A5
• 5 simple ways you can implement this notice
• A sheet with the BSL Fingerspelling alphabet to share with colleagues – to learn to spell things in British Sign Language
At terptree, we work with businesses to create an inclusive world for deaf people.
