Poundland Supplier Impact & Support Register

The Home & Gift Association (HGA) has launched a dedicated Poundland Supplier Impact & Support Register to understand the scale of disruption facing suppliers and help affected businesses access support, new commercial connections and alternative routes to market.

The initiative follows Poundland’s filing of a Notice of Intention to Appoint Administrators. The filing provides temporary protection from creditor action while efforts continue to secure the retailer’s future. Poundland has not entered administration at this stage.

HGA estimates that Poundland represents circa £250 million of value to the UK home, gift and general merchandise market. The association stresses that this is an HGA estimate and not a reported Poundland figure, but believes it demonstrates the potential scale of exposure across the sector.

Poundland’s general merchandise offer touches a significant breadth of product categories, including homewares, stationery, toys, summer and outdoor, gardening, celebrations, Christmas, Easter, Halloween, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Valentine’s Day.

Behind these product categories are manufacturers, importers, designers, distributors and SMEs, many of which could face challenges around outstanding payments, existing orders, committed production and stock originally destined for the retailer. Reports have already highlighted suppliers’ concerns around payments and deliveries.

Gemma Sault, Managing Director of the Home & Gift Association, said: “Our estimate of circa £250 million gives some indication of just how important Poundland is to the home, gift and general merchandise supply chain. I want to be very clear that this is an HGA estimate rather than a reported Poundland figure, but it highlights why the uncertainty surrounding the retailer matters to so many businesses. Behind that estimated figure are purchase orders, products already manufactured, seasonal stock, cash-flow commitments, jobs and people’s livelihoods. This is exactly when a trade association should step forward. We don’t simply want to comment on what is happening. We want to help.

Through our Supplier Impact & Support Register, we want affected businesses to tell us what they’re facing, where stock may need an alternative route to market and what practical support they need. We’re also calling on retailers and buyers across our network to come forward. If there’s an opportunity to introduce an affected supplier to a new customer or find a home for stock that has already been committed, we want to help make those connections. This isn’t just about one retailer. It is about the ecosystem around it: suppliers, employees, independent businesses and the high streets and communities in which they operate.”

Wider implications for Britain’s high streets
The potential impact extends beyond Poundland’s direct supply chain. Poundland operates around 600 stores, and its founder Steve Smith has highlighted the scale of the wider supply chain, referring to more than 2,000 suppliers.

HGA is concerned about the potential secondary impact of store closures on town centres. Large stores can form part of the footfall ecosystem on which neighbouring independent retailers, cafés, hospitality operators and other businesses depend. The possibility of significant store closures if a rescue cannot be secured has also been widely reported.

Sault added: “When a significant retailer disappears from a high street, the concern isn’t simply the empty unit it leaves behind. It’s the potential loss of footfall and what that could mean for the independent retailer, café or other business trading nearby. Our retail ecosystem is incredibly interconnected. Pressure on one part can create ripple effects through many others.”

HGA Poundland Supplier Impact & Support Register
HGA is asking all businesses affected by the Poundland situation, whether HGA members or not, to complete its dedicated register. The information will help HGA build an evidence-based picture of the impact, including: Financial exposure, unpaid invoices and affected orders ,stock already manufactured or committed, seasonal and time-sensitive stock, cash-flow pressures, products requiring alternative routes to market.

A call to retailers and buyers
HGA is also calling on the UK’s wider retail community to support affected businesses. Retailers, buyers, distributors and other commercial partners interested in new suppliers, immediately available products, excess stock or future ranges are being encouraged to contact HGA.

The Association hopes its network can be used to help create connections and identify alternative commercial opportunities where appropriate.
Sault concluded: “Right now, suppliers need clarity, but they also need opportunity. The strength of the home and gift industry has always been its people, its relationships and its ability to come together. An estimated £250 million isn’t just a number. It’s stock. It’s orders. It’s cash flow. It’s jobs. It’s high streets. And, ultimately, it’s people. Our message to affected suppliers is simple: please talk to us. You don’t have to navigate this alone.”
