Denby to appoint administrator

Historic English pottery manufacturer, Denby, a company and brand with over 200 years of heritage, has filed notice to appoint administrators.

Based in Derbyshire, Denby was last acquired in 2010 by Hilco Capital. Up to 500 jobs at risk following two more difficult years of global trading, which saw the company’s turnover fall by 17 per cent.

Denby “has not yet been able to secure a strategic investment partner aligned with the long-term vision and values of its historic British brands and large global fan base,” a spokesperson said”. That search for a suitable partner continues, be that for the entire Denby Group or individual brands.

The company said the decision to appoint administrators was “a precautionary measure”, meant to offer stability whilst it considers all options.

Chris Thomson of the GMB Union, which has members amongst the workforce, commented: “Denby Pottery is a British icon, producing some of the world’s finest ceramics. This is a worrying time for workers across Denby. We are working closely with our members and reps on site.”

He urged the Government to take action on energy prices to support Britain’s world-class pottery sector through this turbulent period of time.
