B&M plots further growth

Value retailer B&M has raised its store target up from 850 to 950 following a big profit spike and strong sales growth, as the value sector as a whole continues to gain ground on Britain’s high streets.

Card Factory, Poundland, Aldi, Lidl and Wilko have also seen their fortunes surge over the past few years as British consumers become increasingly addicted to bargains and no-fuss shopping. Certain parts of the UK are seeing significant upswings in the number of value brand retailers setting up shop on their high streets over the past 5 years, according to Retail Week, including: Romford, Central Liverpool, West Bromwich, Bolton, Derby, Huddersfield, Middlesbrough, Central Nottingham, Preston, Norwich, Barrow-in-Furness, Walsall, Barnsley, Bradford, Hounslow, Central Sheffield and Warrington.

Some towns, West Bromwich being a good example, are dominated by discount retailers and don’t have much other choice for shoppers
