Gratitude for greetings across the Atlantic

Iconic New York stationery exhibition, The National Stationery Show, will open at Jacob J Javits Center, NYC, on May 19 – 23. The only event for the North American stationery market, the NSS convenes thousands of industry professionals at the New York hub.

This year the show organisers are encouraging gratitude this year with the “Appreciation Station.” Since a simple message of gratitude can go a long way, the NSS is inviting participants to pen a message of appreciation that will be mailed from the Show Floor. The effort is being supported by exhibitors: 1973, Ashkahn, Avanti, Calypso Cards, Egg Press, Hello!Lucky, and Sakura, alongside the Thinking of You Week effort.

“While thank-yous and expressing gratitude through a card or hand-written note never goes out of style, the activity has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity and attention with millennials and their appreciation for the time invested in writing the note,” noted Kelly P. Bristol, the NSS Show Director. “With so many wonderful things happening in the industry and at the Show, we are happy to shine a spotlight on sharing kind words and showing appreciation.”

Mr. Thank You, formally known as John “Izzy” Israel will be a guest speaker Sunday, May 20, in The Theatre on the Boulevard. He’s on a mission to elevate the level of gratitude on earth by 1% — equivalent to 74 million Thank You cards. This effort began in October 2016, when he wrote five Thank You cards each day, every day for a full year. He’ll share how this effort has transformed his life. He will be signing copies of his new book, “The Mr. Thank You Project,” following his talk.

In conjunction with the gratitude effort, four 45-minute Calligraphy Workshops will be held Sunday through Tuesday. Sign-up on-site is required. Sunday, May 20, Becky Park of Wellspring Writes will host an introduction to pointed pen calligraphy, covering the basics and use of some beginner tools. Participants will learn the basic shapes of the English Roundhand style script.

Monday, May 21, Danielle Rothman, Rothbyrns Creative, a modern calligrapher specializing in personalization and thoughtful gifts, will present examples of creating one-of-a-kind journals, prints, and calligraphy designs for any occasion. Tuesday, May 22, Chavelli Tsui of Studio Chavelli will bring the elements of calligraphy and wax seals together. Attendees will learn how to write simple calligraphic letters using brush marker or chisel tip to write a short message.

Other programs and events include the Buyers Education Program, Broadway Bound, The Boulevard, Makers’ Day Seminars, the Best New Product Awards competition, and the Retail Tour.

Mohawk is the official paper sponsor of the NSS 2018, providing stock for the attendee and exhibitor materials and promotions. Uchida of America Corporation is the official pen sponsor of the NSS 2018, providing a distinctive pink LePen with the Show name at registration. The Casey BarberSHOP is the official pin sponsor of the Show, providing a fun, NYC-themed pin to buyers at registration.

Two additional Emerald Expositions-owned design events – SURTEX, North America’s premier exposition for the selling and licensing of original art and design, and the ICFF – will run concurrently with the National Stationery Show at New York City’s Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. One badge provides attendees and exhibitors access to all three events, generating cross-market innovation and inspiration.
