Cockpit Arts is the UK’s only creative business incubator for craftspeople and an award winning social enterprise, housing up to 170 small businesses at their studios in central and south London. From here the group supports craft makers at the start of their careers, as well as those who are more established, to grow and build successful, thriving businesses in the UK and internationally.
They work with a wide range of talented individuals, including master craftspeople, artist-makers, batch producers and more scalable businesses. They also offer training and support for makers who do not have a studio at Cockpit but want to learn from their approach, currently working 27 London-based makers who participate in the London Creative Network programme.
Detailed below are all of their open and upcoming Awards bursaries, which all bring a winning prize of business support provided by Cockpit Arts plus subsidised studio space for one year.
New for 2018: The Cockpit Arts / Worshipful Company of Woolmen Award for makers working primarily with wool textiles looking to develop their practice and business. Closing date 19 October
The Cockpit Arts / Leathersellers’ Award is open all year round with applications accepted on a rolling basis. It is open to talented makers who are seeking business development support to take their creative business to the next level. Sponsored by The Leathersellers’ Company Charitable Fund
The Cockpit Arts / Radcliffe Craft Development Award is open to entries with a closing date of 12 noon on October 12 2018. It is open to a talented maker with a commitment to high quality craftsmanship, who demonstrates a clear need and commitment to developing their craft skill. As well as a subsidised place at Cockpit Arts for one year, the winner will receive a £1,000 bursary towards a craft development programme of their choice.
The Cockpit Arts Rosalind Stracey Ceramic Residency is open to entries with a closing date of 12 noon on October 5 2018. It is open to a ceramicist who has a strong desire to experiment and take risks with their practice. The successful applicant will be provided with a dedicated studio at our south London premises including the use of a kiln, thanks to support from Rohde kilns. The Cockpit Arts / The Worshipful Company of Basketmakers’ Award is open to entries with a closing date of 12 noon on October 10 2018. It is open to a maker practicing basket making and the aim of the Award is to welcome a basket maker to start up and grow as an independent maker and business owner. Sponsored by The Worshipful Company of Basketmakers Charitable Trust.
The Cockpit Arts / Haberdashers’ Award will open for entries in December 2018 and is open to makers working in knit to assist them to set up in business. Sponsored by: The Haberdashers’ Company.
