Peter Blake retrospective is an early Christmas treat

We’re big fans of legendary pop artist Peter Blake and welcomed the chance for a peep at this retrospective exhibition – Rock, Paper Scissors – being held at London’s Waddington Custot Galleries.

This is the first major retrospective exhibition devoted to Peter Blake in the UK since 2007. It features almost 50 new and previously unseen works from the past six decades. The exhibition title takes the idea from the children’s game, and provides a framework for the sections sculpture, works on paper and collage.

Several of the older pieces are reminiscent of Blake’s most iconic work, the cover of The Beatles’ album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. (The original cover design recently fetched £50,000 at auction). Others – especially the more recent ones – are highly nostalgic and reminiscent of a 3D children’s fantasy world

The artist himself is now 80 years old and appears to be reverting back to childhood through his latest work, which incorporate toy figurines and characters like Snow White, The Simpsons and Bugs Bunny.

There is still plenty of time to catch this show, which runs until December 15. Visit the gallery website for more details
